The self-contained GlobalFix 406 EPIRB has an internal, 12-channel GPS receiver so it's ready-to-go with no installation or set-up required. Because its built-in GPS does not turn on until EPIRB activation a certain amount of time will elapse before position information can be added to the GlobalFix's distress signal. This time can vary from just a minute or two in ideal conditions, to extended periods during extremely difficult conditions. Upon activation the GlobalFix 406 transmits the user's unique, digitally encoded 406 MHz distress signal (which includes the GPS-determined position), as well as a 121.5 MHz SAR homing signal. It is available as a fixed-mount Category I models (manual activation / automatic activation once submerged to 13 feet), or the more popular Category II models (manual activation only). There's a built-in strobe light to aid rescue, as well as an easy-to-use switch for testing and operation. A lithium battery with a 5-year replacement life and an 11-year storage life is included. EPIRBs are sold with ACR's 5-year limited warranty and, for safety assurance reasons, are not returnable after purchase. GPS-enhanced EPIRBs are arguably the greatest electronic rescue products ever! GPS technology now allows EPIRB signals to tell rescuers not only who you are, but also precisely where you are – all in a matter of minutes. Rescue operations will only start after a distress position is determined. Because they quickly relay precise position data, GPS-enhanced EPIRBs save critical time. Compared to standard 406 EPIRB rescue response times which, near the equator, can be hours, the response time following an ACR GlobalFix 406 or RapidFix 406 activation will typically be only minutes. And rescuers can determine your location within a few hundred yards as opposed to a general two-mile radius search area.
