The GPSMAP 278 is an amazingly versatile and portable colour chartplotter and navigator that comes pre-loaded with a comprehensive set of European street maps. “The GPSMAP 278 is the ideal companion whether you’re sailing coastal waterways, boating on inland lakes, or driving across Europe,” says Garmin’s EMEA General Manager, Sean Biddlecombe. “The unit comes pre-loaded with European road mapping and accepts optional BlueChart® g2 data cards for detailed marine cartography.” For road trips, the GPSMAP 278 has detailed street maps of the UK and Europe, including Eastern Europe. This includes more than six million points of interest including hotels, restaurants, petrol stations, marinas, attractions, and more. Map data is provided by NAVTEQ – a world leader in premium-quality mapping. Each unit comes with a marine mount and automotive kit (including an integrated 12V power supply and speaker) that makes it transferable from boat to car. For on-the-water trips, boaters can load the GPSMAP 278 with Garmin’s BlueChart g2 cartography, giving boaters amazingly rich detail and content – data like tides and currents overlaid on the chart. Other chart features include shaded depth contours, port plans, wrecks, restricted areas, and more. The GPSMAP 278 is waterproof to IEC 60529, IPX-7 standards (submersible to one metre for up to 30 minutes) and boasts an enhanced high-resolution 256-color sunlight readable TFT display. For map transfer or software updates, the unit features a fast USB-PC interface. Users can load additional charts, maps, waypoints and routes through the unit’s data card slot. For full feature sonar capability you can pair the GPSMAP 278 with the GSD 21 remote sounder. The GSD 21 is Garmin’s “black box” sounder, which offers 4,000 watts of power peak-to-peak (500 watts RMS) in a dual-frequency transducer (purchased separately). Standard accessories include a marine and automotive mount, bare wire power/data cable, 12-volt power adapter with speaker, USB-PC interface cable, AC adapter, rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack, Trip and Waypoint Manager CD-ROM, user’s manual, and a quick start guide.
